Apple Computer dead? Long live Apple.

This did not get a lot of attention yesterday, but Apple changed their name from Apple Computer, Inc. to Apple, Inc.

Having worked at a Company that has changed their name, this can be a pretty big deal. For Apple it is not a total re-branding, but it reflects what they are doing now, consumer electronics.

That being said, when Apple introduced the iPod, they may not of counted on most of their money coming from iPod sales within five years.

The Apple iPhone and Apple TV are both products geared for consumer market. Microsoft is also headed in this direction as well with the XBox 360 and the Zune.

Jake Churchill's Gravatar Zune what? I'd rather carry stacks and stacks of cassette tapes than use a Zune. I'll stick with my video iPod.

Alan Daveline's Gravatar Does this mean Microsoft is going to change their name to "Micro"???? Since they do much more than software. ;)

Joseph Spaur's Gravatar First and foremost, Microsoft is still a software company, and I really don't see that changing anytime soon..so I doubt we'll change our name anytime soon. While we are putting out more hardware, we're really only doing it where it makes the most sense for us to do this such as the case for Zune and XBOX. Will we do the same for a Zune based phone? Who knows, but I'm sure we'll eventually see. A Microsoft PC though, I can say won't happen...atleast not in the next 20 years. :)

Btw, I like my Zune, its a great device for sticking in my jacket pocket while riding the bus, and its def. a lot more fun to watch TV shows and DVDs on than the little screens the iPod has. The UI is great, and I really think we'll see some great applications for wireless sharing here soon.

David Fekke's Gravatar Joe,

I did not mean to imply that Microsoft is no longer a software company, but it is clear to me that you guys are expanding past just PC software. The XBox and the Zune are just the start of this trend.

I have a Mac at home, and I use a Microsoft mouse over the Apple mighty mouse. The Microsoft mouse is much better than the Apple mighty mouse.

Stay warm in Redmond Joe,
David ;-)
