HD-DVD is Dead to Me

I am a big fan of open standards. One of the things that has prevented me from upgrading to a HDTV and a new high def player is that lack of a high def format standard.

There have been two camps for the last couple of years for high def video players, Toshiba's HD-DVD and Sony's Blu-Ray. This past weekend Warner Brothers anounced that they were going drop support for HD-DVD and go with Blu-Ray exclusively. I read today on engadget that Paramount was switching to Blu-Ray. That leaves only one major studio behind HD-DVD, that being Universal, and I am sure Universal will drop support as well.

I have not purchased one of these players yet because I did not want to get Betamaxed. I will probably buy a Blu-Ray player now, I am even thinking about getting a Play Station 3.

I'm actually not moving to either format right now and am enjoying COMCAST's Video-on-Demand and XBox360 HD downloads and recently supported Divx codec. There was a $179 special for an XBox360 HD drive and 8 free movies, but I figured I'd wait after going to Hollywood Video and finding that the HD/Blue-Ray videos were in short supply (I've already seen everything) and the movies that I like are locked on each of the competing formats.

Calvin's Gravatar It may be still too early to jump ship from DVD. I personally am waiting for full coverage of titles, or...

Who is to say that we won't be downloading all of our movies soon anyway.

Troy Allen's Gravatar I got the Xbox 360 HD-DVD Add-on with the Remote, King Kong, and the mail-in coupon for 8 more movies at my local Sam's Club for $150 back in the summer of '07. I have always known that Blu-Ray was the slightly superior technology, but the picture and sound quality on both is the same. So for $150 I have already enjoyed 6 months of HD goodness (and counting). I get HD-DVDs from my BlockBuster Online account, so other than those original 9 movies, I have only purchased 3 more. The only downside of this setup is having two units (the main 360 and the add-on), and the NOISE of the 360! While watching a movie, the fan and disc noise is no where near as bad as it is when playing a game. But it is still far too loud for home theater setup. Heck, my gear is all in a dedicated A/V closet, and I can still hear it during the silent parts of movies!

I too will probably get a PS3 after the next price drop, so I will have the best of all worlds for both gaming and HD movie watching.
